Description
Our BSL handshapes sign can be used as a stand-alone sign, but is really designed as a supporting resource for our other British Sign Language signs.
It is comprised of beautiful illustrations of the most common handshapes used in BSL and the written phrases used to describe them. Understanding these shapes and their names is helpful in interpreting instructions for more complicated sign actions, such as those depicted on our other BSL signs.
The illustrations are provided by our partner, the leading BSL resource provider in the UK, LET’S SIGN. Working with LET’S SIGN ensures our BSL signs are as clear and accurate as possible.
We recommend displaying this sign alongside any of our other BSL signs that have written descriptions. These written descriptions often reference the basic handshape names that are described on this sign. Of course, if you have a number of BSL signs in a given area, you would only need one Basic Handshapes sign as a reference for all of them.
Whole school involvement in sign language doesn’t just benefit deaf children – it is a valuable teaching strategy for children with a wide range of additional speech and language needs. Signing is also proving to be a valuable learning tool for children with no additional needs. Most importantly, it helps to ensure a fully inclusive environment.
The sign can be customised with a background colour and uniform colour to suit your school. You can also add your school’s logo to the top right corner.
